A BRIEF HISTORY
One of Georgia’s Oldest Counties
DeKalb County was founded on December 9, 1822, and named for Johann de Kalb, a German-born general who fought and died for the American cause in the Revolutionary War. Its county seat, Decatur, predates Atlanta itself — in fact, DeKalb once stretched west far enough to include the area that became Atlanta, until the state carved off Fulton County from its western half in 1853.
Through the 20th century, DeKalb grew into a core inner-ring Atlanta suburb, anchored by Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), both major employers to this day. Stone Mountain, on the county's eastern edge, became one of the Southeast's most-visited attractions.
From the 1970s onward, DeKalb became one of the region's most internationally diverse counties, with the Buford Highway corridor in particular known for its concentration of immigrant-owned restaurants and businesses.
