A BRIEF HISTORY
Named for the granite under its red clay
Rockdale County was formed on October 18, 1870, carved from parts of Newton and Henry counties, making it one of the newer counties in the metro Atlanta region. It takes its name from Rockdale Baptist Church, established in 1847 and itself named for the granite bedrock that underlies the county's characteristic red clay soil.
Conyers, the county seat and largest city, grew up around the Georgia Railroad as a farming and granite-quarrying town. In more recent history, Conyers hosted the equestrian, mountain biking, and shooting events of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games at the Georgia International Horse Park, a legacy venue that still anchors the county's identity today.
Like much of the Atlanta region, Rockdale has seen significant demographic change since 2000, shifting from a majority-white county to a majority-Black community by 2020 — part of the broader "new great migration" reshaping the Southeast.
